Yesterday, shortly before 3pm, the nation collectively rose from the dining table and - well fed on roast turkey and mince pies - slumped on to the sofa for the King's Speech.

The monarch's Christmas broadcast is not only powerful because of its intimacy, being transmitted into each of our homes.

It also seeks to unite us as a country, reflecting on the triumphs and troubles of the past year - and hopes for the next one.

Speaking of Christmas as a time for 'family and friends to come together', King Charles reminded us of the timeless values we share - people of all religions and none. Of care and compassion towards others, of the importance of forgiveness.

And during the Royal Family's walk to the traditional Sandringham church service, it was clear His Majesty was practising what he preached. For the first time in three decades, the once-exiled Duchess of York - Prince Andrew's former wife - was invited to join the entourage.

It would be catastrophic for the international rules-based order if Vladimir Putin were to win

After endless brickbats from Harry and Meghan, this was the Windsors showing a defiantly united front, while signalling Charles's firm belief in reconciliation.

In an age of growing secularism, this was a far more explicitly Christian speech than expected. Several times the King, a committed Anglican, alluded to the Bible - nowhere more so than in his impassioned plea for peace at a time of 'increasingly tragic conflict around the world'.

The words of Jesus, he said, had rarely seemed more relevant: 'Do to others as you would have them do to you.'

Of course, no right-thinking person could disagree. Dreadful things are happening across the globe, from the war in Gaza and the Russian invasion of Ukraine to Iranian-sponsored attacks on ships in the Red Sea. We all want an outbreak of harmony.

Yet, ultimately, the only way to deliver a long-lasting peace is for tyranny and terror to be defeated. Britain can be proud that we have shown unwavering support to the people of Ukraine and Israel since they came under brutal attack.

But more must be done. It would be catastrophic for the international rules-based order if Vladimir Putin were to win.

Equally, while events in Gaza are heartbreaking, the world will be less safe if Hamas, after its savagery on October 7 and threats to repeat it, is not eradicated.

The problem is, the West is suffering from conflict fatigue. The US and EU are bickering inwardly about providing more aid for Ukraine, while calls grow ever louder for Israel to cease military operations.

It would, however, be a serious error for the free world not to strain every sinew to defend democracy. Yes, Charles is right to point out that peace is the greatest blessing of all. But history shows us it can never be achieved while evil continues to exist.

Britain's Brexit boost
With the polls pointing to a Labour landslide at the next election, Sir Keir Starmer has been practising the argument he will use to forge closer ties with the EU: That Brexit has been an economic flop.

Yet, as a report by the influential Centre for Economics and Business Research shows, Britain is in fact prospering compared to our continental neighbours.

Not only will we remain Europe's second largest economy by 2038, but we'll have also narrowed the gap on Germany. France, by contrast, will fall further behind - hobbled by even higher taxes than here, a sclerotic public sector and crippling strikes.

Sir Keir Starmer has been practising the argument he will use to forge closer ties with the EU: That Brexit has been an economic flop

Unshackled from the bloc, the possibilities for Britain to build strong relations with fast-growing countries and spearhead cutting-edge technologies are endless. And with lower taxes and interest rate cuts on the cards, our prospects are even brighter.

Could there be a more eloquent rebuttal of Sir Keir's argument for crawling back towards the doomed European project in the hope of eventually rejoining?
